2003 Mopars Against the World

ACHA WINS $7,500
A record turnout of racers from all over the north central states and Canada flocked to Northern Michigan Dragway August 16 - 17 to compete at The Sixth Annual ' Mopars Against the World' event. On Saturday, 175 entries tied the largest field of entries ever; and Sunday's total of 186 broke the record, held since the 2001 Leonard Lindeman Memorial Race.
Dave Acha of Interlochen took home the largest prize ever won at Northern, on Saturday. It was the third year in a row that a home track racer has won the main event ( Jim Weeks of Beulah in 2001, and in 2002 Fred Schwedt of Cheboygan were MAW champs ). Acha defeated Mike Ledford of Greenville in the final round in a thrilling side-by-side battle; winning with a stout .010 reaction time which proved to be the difference in the race. Semifinalist Jerry Brown, from Grand Haven, was a key player all the way - losing his race with the same .010 reaction time that won for Acha.
The Sunday winner was Rusty Sampsel from Lapeer, pounding his opponent, Frank Whitaker of Ithaca in the final; following a valiant, but losing, effort in the semi-final by Rick Ross from Sterling Heights.
Saturday evening music was provided by '
Whiskey Chicken ' from the Cheboygan area, after a smokey
burnout contest.
July 12th and 13th Race Results

Huntley took the runner-up spot, Randy Budde was semifinalist! Ron
Hagar wins Street, Phil Gunther settles for runner-up. Advanced Trophy
winner is Bill Fluette, Pure Trophy was won by Kim Budde Again!! Ron
Hagar took the win in the Gamblers Race.
Bernie Galdeen
of Muskegon brought his dragster to NMD for his first time and it proved to be
a good trip. He took the $1000 Super Quick win over Steve Mikus of Ashley in
his fearsome Rally Nova.

Mayfield also went to the semi-final of the Street Race of Champions. NMD track manager Brian Ledford of Kaleva, racing for Team Ubly, was the runner-up in the Street Race of Champions to Milan's Tom Kraft.
